The best restaurant in the world is still Danish
For the third consecutive time, NOMA has been named the best restaurant in the world by Restaurant Magazine. The title secures NOMA and head chef, Rene Redzepi a prominent place in the gastronomic history books and has the restaurant remain the world’s most sought after culinary experience for at least one more year.
While the top three of the 2012 version of the prestigious list of the world’s 50 best restaurant is the same as in 2011, the real sensation is in the bottom half of the list, where Danish restaurant Geranium occupies 49th position. The entry of the restaurant, run by the 2011 Bocuse d’Or champion Rasmus Kofoed, makes it the first time that two Danish restaurants make the top 50 the same year.
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list is an annual snapshot of the opinions and experiences of over 800 international restaurant industry experts. What constitutes “best” is left to the judgment of these trusted and well-travelled gourmets. The award is thus and important recogniton by gastronomic peers of NOMA’s consistency in excellence and the fact that Geranium made the list underscores once again that Denmark is currently a gastronomic power house.
When the 2012 edition of the Michelin Guide was released earlier this spring, NOMA was awarded two Michelin stars and Copenhagen’s restaurants a total of 14 stars. Not only is that more than any other Scandinavian city, it is also more than other European cities such as Hamburg, Amsterdam and Vienna, Copenhagen also has more Michelin restaurants than Rome.
